Call for Participants

Applied Energy Summer School (2016)

Optimization Clean Energy Tool Box

We are happy to invite you to participate in the Applied Energy Summer School 2016: Optimization Clean Energy Tool Box that will take place at Applied Energy Innovation Institute, Ningbo, China, from July 25 to August 3, 2016.

Applied Energy Summer School (AEss), associated with UNiLAB, a specialized platform to facilitate networking and communications in energy areas and strengthen the multi-disciplinary collaborations, aims to build an academic, professional and persistent community for young scholars and experts by providing training courses, teamwork projects, plant tour opportunities and career development.

The missions of AEss are:

Co-location fosters collaboration, innovation and multi-disciplinary comprehension through face-to-face communication and training courses

Collaboration leads to creative integration and system solutions to complex problems by exploring linkages among different energy system components and developing a framework of system integration

Career development shapes the future of youth with interactive exchange with editors, entrepreneurs, product producers, decision makers and investors

The scope for the AEss 2016 is to create a community that uses and develops Optimization Clean Energy Tool Box. OptiCE toolbox is an open source model for optimization, simulation and design of clean energy systems for off-grid and on-grid applications. OptiCE toolbox is an essential tool for researchers, consultants and decision makers working in the fields of clean energy systems, renewable energies, hybrid power system, distributed energy generation and mini/microgrids.

The main objective is to identify some missing power sources and energy storage technologies to be integrated in OptiCE toolbox. The practical task is to develop 4-5 new sub-models to be integrated in the original model to create a more robust and useful tools that can be used in the research and consultancy communities. Particular tasks can be devoted to the development of the already existing sub-models and interface.

AEss invites highly motivated international students (undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students) and young scientists from various academic backgrounds to participate. We would like to take in 20 attendances for 3 groups working separately.

Experts from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, well-known international research institutes and the prestigious press like Elsevier and Wiley will guide students the training courses, discussions, research and project-design with a special focus on conflicts associated with the topic.

The 10-days summer school is an intensive course that provides students with an overview of clean energy technology, commercialization, policy and finance. Based on OptiCE toolbox, the courses are delivered through a combination of academic lectures, career development module, team-project-design and on-site tour of renewable pilot projects to have opportunity to see working systems that utilize clean energy.

The courses are designed based on OptiCE toolbox with six modules of applied energy, namely Renewable Energy, Conversion Technologies, Mitigation Technologies, Intelligent Energy Uses, Energy Storage, and Sustainability, and divided into four blocks on wind, solar, biomass, geothermal with specialized topics.

The whole camp will feature a combination of lectures, panel discussions, brainstorming, team-project design and plant tour.

Expected Design Courses:

    Renewable Energy

    Clean Energy Conversion Technologies

    Mitigation Technologies

    Intelligent Energy Systems

    Energy Storage

    Sustainability of Energy Systems

Team Project:

    Solar Water Pumping

    Carbon Capture and Storage

    Home Energy Storage

Plant Tour

The working language of the summer school will be English, therefore, a sufficient understanding and ability to speak English is required.

The AEss participants can benefit of:

Deeply understand the global challenges on technology, commercialization, policy and innovation in the transition to clean energy system

Be involved in highly interactive, innovative and inspiring team-project-design and evaluation from experts

Develop professional skills in communication, engagement and practice

Have opportunities to connect to new networks, to learn from experts in the field, including practitioners, and to discuss their own work.

    Grant course completion certificates
