Tianjin is one of the four municipalities in China, along with Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing. Its name means 'the place where the emperor crossed the river. Once the imperial port city, Tianjin connects Beijing to the Yellow Sea. Tianjin attracts a huge volume of tourists for its splendid historical heritage and colonial architectures. The city was once the concessionary base for Great Britain, Germany, France, Russia, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Japan and Belgium in late nineteenth century. This marked an extremely difficult period for the city, but today the exotic flavored architectures established during the period become a significant attraction for tourists. Being a major seaport city, Tianjin has enjoyed continuous economic prosperity. It is the largest coastal city in northern China and the fourth largest Chinese city in terms of population. Central to the Bohai Economic Rim, Tianjin is a hub of industrial and financial activities, hosting the base offices of 285 Fortune 500 companies.

The oldest university in modern China, Tianjin University, was founded in Tianjin in 1895.
