Welcome to the ICAE2026 – 18th International Conference on Applied Energy, which will be held from September 22–26, 2026, in Jeju Island, South Korea.

ICAE2026 will bring together researchers, academics, industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators from around the world to exchange ideas and present the latest advances in applied energy. As a leading interdisciplinary conference in the field, ICAE provides a global platform for addressing urgent energy challenges through science, engineering, systems thinking, and policy innovation.

This year's theme is: Shaping the AI–Energy Nexus for a Sustainable Future.

The rapid development of artificial intelligence is transforming energy systems, while at the same time creating new demands on energy infrastructure. ICAE2026 will explore this two-way relationship by addressing both AI for Energy and Energy for AI. The conference will highlight how AI can improve forecasting, optimization, control, planning, and system integration across energy sectors, while also examining how clean, resilient, and efficient energy systems can support the growing electricity and cooling demands of AI, data centers, and digital infrastructure.

The conference will feature keynote speeches, invited talks, plenary sessions, workshops, oral presentations, and networking opportunities, fostering collaboration across disciplines and sectors.

Authors are invited to submit either an abstract or a full paper.

All submissions must be written in English and follow the conference formatting requirements. Submitted work should be original and should not have been previously published or be under consideration elsewhere.

Publications: All accepted and presented papers will be considered for publication in Scopus-indexed conference proceedings, subject to the conference's review and publication policies. Selected high-quality papers may be recommended for further consideration in special issues or partner journals associated with the Applied Energy community, subject to each journal's independent review process.

All submitted papers for the 18th International Conference on Applied Energy (ICAE2026) will undergo a rigorous peer-review process for acceptance. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings of ICAE2026 with open access.
To ensure the publication of your manuscript in Energy Proceedings, we will provide you with detailed instructions on how to submit the final version. This will allow you to make any necessary revisions to your paper before the submission deadline.
We encourage all authors to carefully review their papers and make any required adjustments to ensure the highest quality and relevance of their research.

We do not restrict the style of PPT, but here is an official PPT template for your convenience.

The reason for the recommendation of 4 pages is to avoid high similarity for the papers that may be later recommended and published in the special issues. You might have extra pages but please keep the whole paper with a maximum of 10 pages.
In addition, selected papers will also be FURTHER recommended for publication in a special issue of prestigious journals such as Applied Energy, Advances in Applied Energy, Energy 360 and Nexus.

One registration only covers the cost of ONE participant who will present ONE paper (Oral or Poster) or not present. For the second paper, an extra fee of $200 is required. Please contact icae2026@applied-energy.org for the second paper registration.

Full-time student (NOT including post-doctor) MUST provide proof of full-time status (copy of a valid student ID card or a letter from the affiliated institution head or program director).

The accompanying person (family person only) is welcome to attend the non-academic events, and is not allowed to attend the conference sessions, workshops, etc. The fee only covers lunches and the conference banquet. To register an accompanying person, please contact icae2026@applied-energy.org.

For the participants who will register onsite, a confirmation with a signature is required to be sent to icae2026@applied-energy.org before the registration deadline.

Jeju Island Entry Visa Support Service

Travelers who enter Jeju Island directly from overseas may be eligible for the Jeju visa-free entry scheme, subject to nationality and immigration rules. This scheme generally applies only to direct routes to Jeju without stopping in other parts of Korea, such as Seoul/Incheon or Busan. If travelers transit through mainland Korea before arriving in Jeju, standard Korean entry requirements apply.

Travel to ICC JEJU

  • By Airport Limousine Bus — From Jeju International Airport, participants may take Airport Limousine Bus No. 600 toward Jungmun Tourist Complex / Seogwipo. The bus stops at or near ICC JEJU and major hotels in the Jungmun area. The journey usually takes about 60 minutes, depending on traffic and stops. The limousine bus stop is located near Gate 5 on the 1st floor of Jeju International Airport.
  • By Taxi / Ride-hailing — Taxis are available at Jeju International Airport and throughout Jeju Island. The journey from Jeju International Airport to ICC JEJU usually takes about 40-50 minutes by car via Pyeonghwa-ro, depending on traffic. Ride-hailing and taxi-booking apps such as Kakao T may also be used in Korea.
  • By Rental Car — Participants who wish to explore Jeju Island during their stay may consider renting a car at Jeju International Airport. Driving from the airport to ICC JEJU takes approximately 40-50 minutes under normal traffic conditions. Please note that an international driving permit or valid Korean driving license may be required.
  • By Local Bus — Local and intercity buses connect Jeju International Airport, Jeju City, Jungmun Tourist Complex, and Seogwipo. Participants using public buses are advised to check real-time routes and schedules through Jeju Bus Information System, Naver Map, or Kakao Map before departure.

International Travel to Jeju

Most international participants will arrive in Korea through Incheon International Airport (ICN), Gimpo International Airport (GMP), Busan Gimhae International Airport (PUS), or directly through Jeju International Airport (CJU), depending on available flight routes.

Participants arriving at Incheon International Airport may transfer to Gimpo International Airport by AREX airport railroad, airport limousine bus, or taxi, and then take a domestic flight from Gimpo to Jeju. Domestic flights to Jeju are frequent from major Korean cities, especially Seoul-Gimpo, Busan, Daegu, Cheongju, and Gwangju.

From Jeju International Airport to ICC JEJU

  • By Airport Limousine Bus No. 600 — Route: Jeju International Airport -> Jungmun Tourist Complex -> ICC JEJU -> Seogwipo. Travel time: approximately 60 minutes. Recommended for participants staying near ICC JEJU or in the Jungmun area.

From Other Cities in Korea

  • By Domestic Flight — The most convenient way to reach Jeju from other Korean cities is by domestic flight to Jeju International Airport. Frequent flights operate between Jeju and Seoul-Gimpo, Busan, Daegu, Cheongju, Gwangju, and other major cities.
  • By Ferry — Ferry services to Jeju are available from selected ports in mainland Korea. However, ferry schedules are weather-dependent and travel times are much longer than flights. Participants are advised to use domestic flights unless they have specific travel plans involving ferry routes.

For real-time public transportation, taxi routes, and walking directions in Jeju, participants may use Naver Map or Kakao Map. Google Maps may have limited public transportation functionality in Korea.

Short Bio of the Speaker

Meng Tao is a Professor in the School of Electrical, Computer & Energy Engineering at Arizona State University. His research focuses on terawatt solar technologies. It covers a wide range of topics from materials and devices to systems and applications. Current funded projects include recycling technologies for solar panels and solar systems for electrolytic hydrogen production. He directs the Global Hydrogen Production Technologies Center, an international partnership jointly funded by Australia, Canada, UK, and US. He was awarded Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Alternative Energy from the US State Department and was invited to the 2017 Nobel Award Ceremony in Stockholm.

Abstract

Power system design plays a crucial role in reducing the cost of clean hydrogen by electrolysis. In this talk, several power system innovations are introduced for a significantly lower cost of clean hydrogen without energy storage or grid power: 1) multi-powered electrolysis by solar, wind, hydro, and/or nuclear to increase capacity factor and minimize intermittency induced degradation, 2) a proper order in power consumption and electrolyzer location in the multi-power system, 3) maximum power point tracking without a power converter in direct coupled solar electrolyzers, and 4) maximum current point tracking to maximize hydrogen output. These innovations result in a 50% lower cost of solar electricity for electrolysis than current solar electrolyzers, while maximizing the energy efficiency for each power source.
